Stainless Steel 446 is high alloy steel known for its outstanding corrosion resistance compared to other nickel-chromium steels. Stainless Steel is generally divided into three groups, with the names martensitic, austenitic and ferric steels. The combination of martensitic and ferric steels forms another group most often known as precipitation-hardened steel. Chromium up to 27%, manganese less than 2%, silicon less than 1%, 0.2% of carbon, and other minor elements in small proportion is the chemical balance of these grades.
SS 446 pipe fittings machinability is done at slow speeds, stern raises, and sharp tooling surfaces. SS 446 can be welded easily using old methodologies by avoiding oxyacetylene welding. To achieve grain refinement and to crack at room temperature, this grade should use 10% forging to be performed down to 871ºC. Cool working for SS 446 is much more difficult when compared to other alloy grades due to the high degree of chromium content.
